Run O’ The Mill Bishop by John Bickersteth (Capella Archive,

£22.50). This memoir by the former Bishop of Bath and Wells and Clerk of the Closet to the Queen provides a fascinating insight into the life of the Church of England for outsiders. Bickersteth comes from a family that has given five bishops to the Church. He was born within the shadow of Canterbury Cathedral and his background reflects this insider status: his grandmother was photographed by Lewis Carroll; his mother was a friend of Sybil Thorndike; he was educated at Rugby and Oxford, and saw active service as an officer in the Buffs.
